Today, the average life expectancy is at a record high of 79 years. As we get older, even the most independent among us may experience physical declines or financial hardship that strips away our independence. Add to that an increase in geographic mobility of our families, and the result is millions of seniors left behind, hungry and alone.
GECAC Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers more than 100,000 meals each year.
COVID-19 Information: GECAC offices are closed to the public due to COVID-19 but our dedicated staff is serving clients via phone, email, and virtual. GECAC Meals on Wheels continues to deliver meals to over 400 low-income seniors throughout Erie County. Call the Senior Helpline at 814-459-4581 ext. 400 to sign up for meals.
GECAC Meals on Wheels has been guided by a single goal – to support our senior neighbors to extend their independence and health as they age. GECAC offers free meals paid for by the Pennsylvania State Lottery revenue. Every visit comes with a nutritious meal created to address the specific health conditions of the senior, a safety check around the house and an assessment of any changes that might impact future medical needs. This can mean the difference between independent living at home and an unwelcome transfer to a costly long-term care facility.
Our volunteers deliver meals Monday through Friday anytime between 9:30 am and noon.
Two frozen meals will be delivered on Fridays for a total of seven meals per week for those consumers who qualify for them.
Frozen meals are delivered on the weekday before a holiday so that our volunteers can be home with their families.
Meals arrive warm. You can save your meal for the evening by refrigerating the container and warming it up in the microwave. Heating instructions are on the container.
