The Issue

Many individuals lack the basic computer skills needed to work in most industries today. Moreover, the process for applying to jobs has changed drastically over the years moving to online platforms and job search sites from paper applications and walk-in interviews leaving many unsure of how to apply for jobs or even do so safely.

Our Impact

GECAC's digital literacy courses will help individuals gain the digital skills necessary to engage in a digital economy and improve their livelihoods. 

Overview

Free classes will be offered to individuals wanting to learn or improve their basic computer skills. Classes will also teach job seekers how to write a cover letter and a resume, and how to search and apply for jobs online.

  • New classes will take place every month.
  • Open computer lab hours will be available to practice your skills and apply for jobs.
  • All classes are free of charge.
  • No computer experience is required.
  • Classes will be taught by GECAC's Adult Education staff.
  • All adults ages 18+ are welcome.

Basic Computer Course

The basic computer classes cover everything from turning on a computer and logging in, to using Microsoft Office and setting up and using email safely. This course will be taught over an 8-week period.

  • Work with computers.
  • Communicate using Outlook or Google email.
  • Create content using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher).
  • Access information online.
  • Participate safely and responsibly online.

Online Job-Seeking Course

Online job-seeking classes will help individuals learn how to write a cover letter and resume, set up a professional email, look for and apply for jobs online, and how to use job search sites. This course will be taught over a 4-week period.

  • Write a resume and cover letter.
  • Find job openings using job search sites and company websites.
  • Complete online job applications.
  • Track and follow up on your job applications.
