Q.  What is LIHEAP?

 

A LIHEAP stands for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) to assist low-income households to help pay energy expenses.   There are three main components to the LIHEAP program: 

    

  • Cash for the payment of home heating costs

  • Crisis relief for emergency situations such as:  running out of fuel, or the impending or actual termination of electric or gas service

  • Repair or replacement of a heating system and other long-term weatherization solutions which are operated through the Department of Community and Economic Development

Q.  Do I have to own a home to qualify for LIHEAP?

        

A.  No, to qualify you may either rent or own your home. 

     

Q.  Do I need to have an unpaid heating bill and be on public assistance to apply?

     

A.  No, you don't need to have an unpaid heating bill, nor be on public assistance to apply for LIHEAP. 

Q. Who is eligible?

A. Homeowners and renters who are on low or fixed incomes and whose yearly income before taxes is equal to or less than:

Q.  How do I Apply?

A.  To apply for LIHEAP, call or visit the Erie County Assistance Office or GECAC

You will need to supply the following information when you call or visit:

- Names of people in your household

- Dates of birth for all household members

- Social Security Numbers for all household members

- Proof of income for members

- A recent heating bill
