Embodies the Spirit of Hope

Betty Lloyd, Switchboard Operator

It’s all about gratitude and attitude. As the first voice that most people calling GECAC hear, Betty Lloyd, Switchboard Operator, is the “voice of GECAC.” In this position, it is essential that she has a pleasant demeanor to comfort those who are confused, listen to those who are seeking help and refer them to the person or department who can best meet their needs. To prepare herself for the challenges she faces each day, Betty starts each morning thinking “wonderful thoughts” and focusing on keeping a good attitude. “Attitude has so much to do with everything.”

Betty was working as a Senior Aide at the Courthouse when her cousin, a former housing counselor, encouraged her to apply for the mailroom position at GECAC. Betty was hired for that position and spent eleven months in it before being promoted to Switchboard Operator, where she has spent the last twenty-one years. Through this position and substituting for front desk staff, Betty is able to follow two of her passions: helping people and giving back to our community. Betty has a special affinity for the elderly and looks forward to helping them. Whether it is to connect them to their case manager or simply to tell them the time and the weather, she tries to lift their spirits. “I tell them to think positive. You might be hurting now, but think about how much you’ve had in your life.”

The Community Action Promise is fulfilled daily through Betty’s work. “I talk to seniors every day and try to lift their spirits if I can. I talk to young people with difficulties and try to pass something good onto them, so they can get something that they need.”
